Description	:	William Edgar Brooks was the second of five children of James S. Brooks and Malissa A. Jones. He was born March 29, 1858, at Mt. Vernon, Linn, Iowa. By 1873, the Brooks family left Mt. Vernon by wagon and proceeded to Osborne, Kansas. Will went with them but returned to Iowa to marry Miss Anna May Fee on March 25, 1885, at Stanwood, Cedar, Iowa. The couple moved to Elgin, Nebraska, not long afterward. Will and Anna had one child, daughter Genevieve Brooks. Around 1917, Genevieve married Rolla (Rollie) Cleveland Huffman. Will went with them but returned to Iowa to marry Miss Anna May Fee on March 25, 1885, at Stanwood, Cedar, Iowa. The couple moved to Elgin, Nebraska, not long afterward. Will and Anna had one child, daughter Genevieve Brooks. Around 1917, Genevieve married Rolla (Rollie) Cleveland Huffman. They had two children: William Brooks and Richard Belden Huffman. For years, Will and Anna ran a furniture store in Elgin. He was the town's undertaker as well. He loved maintaining ties with his parents' old town in Kansas, and he maintained his subscription to the Osborne County Farmer-Journal well into his '90s. Some clippings from the newspaper verify this: "Local Personals - W.E. Brooks, who has been a subscriber to this paper since 1875, and who now lives in Elgin, Neb., where he is in the hardware, furniture, and undertaking business, sends renewal for his paper this week. Many early day Osborne people will remember the Brooks family. His brother [note: his father, not his brother] owned and operated a small boarding house known as the Brooks House, on East Main street for several years." The Osborne County Farmer-Journal; Osborne, Kansas; Thursday, July 4, 1946; page 5. "Local Personals - W.E. Brooks of Elgin, Neb, called at this office Thursday of last week to to subscribe to the Farmer-Journal. Mr. Brooks, who is a former Osborne resident who was in Osborne looking after business matters, is ninety-six years of age and owns and operates a hardware store in Elgin, still going to his place of business each day." The Osborne County Farmer-Journal; Osborne, Kansas; Thursday, June 10, 1954; page 9. Anna Brooks died February 26, 1943. Will survived her and lived until his death at Elgin on November 2, 1960. The Elgin pioneer was 102.
