A couple of years ago he rented his farm and moved with his family to Barnes where he engaged in a hotel business. For some time he has been acting strangely but it was not supposed that he contemplated taking his own life. He is said to have been financially embarrassed and this is evidently what led to the sad ending. Dr. Farrell stays at the hotel. Early Monday morning a call was made for the doctor. Mr. Doan slept down stairs and usually answered the calls made. On this occasion he didn't respond; when his wife called to him he didn't respond. She then woke her family and she and one of the boys started to see what the cause of his absence. They repaired to the barn and soon discovered a lantern in the hay mow. Mrs. Doan at once went up the ladder and was horrified to see the limp form of her husband dangling from a cross beam. He had deliberately planned for his destruction. It is thought the deed was done sometime between three and five o'clock Monday morning. The town was soon aroused and neighbors moved the body to the late home. The funeral will occur here today at 1 o'clock. The deceased was respected by all who knew him. His old friends and neighbors greatly regret that he choose to look upon dark side of life and from the gloom and shadows of despair make a plunge into the great future. His family have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in the hour of their sore bereavement. Montezuma Republican 1-9-1895 **************************************** William H. Doan was born in Park County, Indiana, on Nov. 14th 1839. He moved with his parents to Henry Co., Iowa in 1844, where he resided until 1878, when he brought his family to Poweshiek County, IA, which was his home until about a year and a half ago when he moved to Barnes City, where he resided until his death, which occurred Jan. 7, 1895. On March 19th 1863, he was married to Miss Mary Wilson. Ten children were given them-five girls and five boys, nine of whom are still living to mourn his loss. The funeral services were held in the Christian church at Barnes City. The writer addressed a well filled house, from Heb. 9:27-"It is appointed unto man once to die, after this the judgement," after which the remains were interred in the Montezuma Cemetery. In regard to the manner of his death we wish to say his death was as truly the result of disease as any who occupy a place in the city of the dead. Montezuma Republican 1-23-1895
