Phipps well known East Laurinburg citizen and veteran of the Spanish-American War, died at the Army hospital at Oteen Wednesday night. The McDougal Funeral Home ambulance service went to Oteen and the body was brought here Thursday at noon. Members of Mr. Phipps family were with him at the hospital at the time of his death, and no funeral arrangements have been announced Thursday at noon. Mr. Phipps served in the Spanish American War, it is stated and he was in the Army for some time after that conflict. He was blind and for some years operated a mattress renovating plant at East Laurinburg. Mr. Phipps was born in Horry County, South Carolina and would have been 81 years old had he lived until August 23. He came to Laurinburg about 27 years ago. He was a member of the East Laurinburg Baptist Church. Mr. Phipps had been at the hospital in Oteen for about three months. Some three weeks ago he underwent surgery and had been quite seriously sick for a week. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. N.O. Britt of Charlotte. Mrs. Henry Caison of Aiken, SC. and Miss Elizabeth Phipps of Laurinburg. Sorry I did not for some reason get the end of the obit. gl
