He had been ill for a number of years with both Alzheimer's and Rheumatoid Arthritis. His last months of care were wonderfully provided by the Norseland Residence in Westby, Wisconsin. Prior to that he lived with his sister in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after moving from Williston, which had been his permanent home for many years. After serving in World War II Air Force and graduating from the University of North Dakota School of Law, Bill returned to his home in Elgin, to practice law and to help with the publication of the Grant County News owned by his father,Ralph Beede, former, North Dakota State legislator and lawyer. Bill was elected Grant County Attorney, but that work was interrupted briefly by his recall to the Air Force to serve in the Korean Conflict. Thanks to the energetic support of his Grant County friends, a petition was successfully initiated asking for his recall from active duty, so that he might better serve the people of Grant County. With the finding of oil in the Williston Basin, Bill was employed as the attorney of the Land Department of Amerada Hess. After the death of a judge, Bill was appointed by the then Governor Guy to fill the post of Sixth District Judge. Judge Beede went on to serve 27 years, retiring in 1993, at the age of 71. His career was marked by his great discipline to his work and his dedication to justice. Nonetheless he was also able to bring a healthy sense of humor, appropriately used, into his work environment. His friends knew him as an inveterate collector of cartoons for all occasions, some of which they might receive at significant times in their lives. Judge Beede was also an avid sports enthusiast going back to his high school days, when he won an all-expense paid trip to the World Series, the first such contest offered by a national magazine. He was a member of the Williston Elks Club and a past president of its Rotary Club. He is survived by his sister, Ruth, Minneapolis; and by his two nephews, Will and family, Minneapolis, Ben and family, Westby, Wisconsin; and by a group of very dear and loving friends who continued their friendship during his long illness. A private family memorial has been held. His ashes will be interred in Elgin next to his mother and father in April, when another small memorial service will be held.
