Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at St. John the Baptist Church, in Peosta, with the Rev. Richard Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Centralia, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake prayer service at 4 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church. He was born on Jan. 21, 1927, in Peosta, son of Patrick and Mathilda (Mahoney) McDonald. He grew up in Peosta, and he attended St. John's High School. Bill served in the Army as a paratrooper, stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C., when he met his true love, Jackie Johnson, at Pawley's Pavilion on Pawley's Island, S.C. Bill and Jackie were married on Nov. 15, 1946, and moved to Peosta. He was a skilled carpenter who built many homes and barns throughout Dubuque County. Bill was a tremendous gardener, canning and making jams and jellies from his harvest. During the winter months, he enjoyed designing and making furniture in his workshop. He was an avid reader and loved to make holiday meals. He also loved listening to music and dancing with his wife. He liked to play cards and share lively conversations and good laughs with friends. His greatest joy was being together with his family and his wife. Bill will be remembered as an energetic, creative, and hard-working man who loved his family with all his heart. He will be missed. He was preceded in death by his parents; and seven siblings, Raymond McDonald, Phillip McDonald, in infancy, Calista Spielman, Eileen McDonald, in infancy, Francis McDonald, as a young child, Vincent McDonald and Patrick McDonald.
