Description : The Village of Assateague sits below the Assateague lighthouse bluff along the Assateague Channel. The village was established in 1794 and at its peak had about 250 residents, a church, a store and a school. In the early 1900s, Samuel Fields of Baltimore bought most of Assateague Island and blocked the villagers access to the shore and fish factories. In 1922, most of the villagers barged their homes across the channel to Chincoteague. The last residents left in 1932. In 2010, the USFWS used GPR to locate human remains in the old churchyard.
