Description	:	On the grounds of the Avila Retreat Center, a nonprofit organization maintained by the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, is a small cemetery created by the previous retreat center director, Sister Damian Jackson. Read More	On the grounds of the Avila Retreat Center, a nonprofit organization maintained by the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, is a small cemetery created by the previous retreat center director, Sister Damian Jackson. In the retreat center brochure it says: "She provided the following information on the origin of the site: 'Sometime in the Fall of 1983, I was cleaning the area where the cemetery now stands. I found an old rusty tin marker with the name Sister Mary Veronica, January 26, 1966. I checked with the local funeral parlor to see if Sr. Mary was registered with them, and she was.' "Unfortunately we know nothing else about Sr. Mary's life or death. Sister Damian's brother, Albert E. Jackson, purchased the present grave marker. "The story continues again in October 1996 when the family of Teresa Todd called. They needed a burial place for their daughter and asked if Avila could provide the land. This was the second burial in the cemetery. "After that, there were many more calls from churches, prisons, hospitals, etc. on behalf of grieving families who did not have the means to provide a proper burial for their babies. This little plot of land and the Priests, Pastors, and Sisters who provided the burial services, all became a very special and desperately needed ministry to those many families of varying backgrounds and cultures. Donations for the grave markers were provided by the generosity of past retreatants who also felt the children should be remembered. "Sister Damian recalls: 'A male retreatant from New Zealand once said he had such a spiritual experience "sitting in the baby garden," and that he had never seen such a place. He called it the "Baby Garden" and that name has been repeated through the years.' "This outreach ministry to the families of the deceased babies and young children brought such comfort and peace of mind at a time when they were in dire need. Many of these families still visit the site regularly. "The cemetery reached its capacity in 2013."
