Description | : | On 4 March 1899, a cyclone, now rated at Category 5 and referred to as Cyclone Mahina, swept into the Princess Charlotte Bay area of North Queensland and devastated the pearling fleet working the area. Over 300 lives were lost, making it the worst natural disaster in Queensland recorded history. Queensland death registrations for the event all show the date 5 March 1899, but do not include the indigenous people who lived in the region.
