Description	:	In January, 1950, Deacon C. Foye Amerson of Lakeview Baptist Church began an informal mission to the Oates Community. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Rogers Melton was used as a meeting place for prayer and fellowship for three years. Berea Baptist Church was organized on August 23, 1953 under the guidance of the Welch Neck Baptist Association. Rev. Foye Amerson was called the church's first pastor. With a new church and location ( 3569 Oates Highway, Lamar, S.C. 29069 (843) 332-7498 ) came a new name, Oates Baptist Church. The original church is still located on Mt. Berea Road, one street away, with the cemetery that today is known as Berea Cemetery.
