Old Camp Atkinson, the only military historical landmark in Southwest Louisiana occupied the site in the early part of the 19th century. It’s said that Santa Ann, the famous Mexican general, once spent a night at the fort as a guest of the American soldiers. Hand made bricks from the old forts foundation were used in the construction of the early above ground crypts. Prior to the military camp, the site was occupied by the local Atakapa Indian tribe. In the 1970s an excavation was conducted near the cemetery by the Louisiana Archaeology Society. Numerous pottery shards and stone tools were discovered, along with parts to a flintlock gun. On April 8th, 1840 the cemetery was used for the first time when eight-year-old Margaret Bilbo was buried in family burial spot. It has been estimated that over 200 pioneer residents of Lake Charles have been buried in the old cemetery, most of these graves were either unmarked or their markers have been lost to time. Fewer than 20 to 30 graves remain today. One of the best preserved tombs is that of Mrs. Martha Reid, who died at Lake Charles on August 2, 1878, at 35 years of age. She was the wife of John Reid, and great aunt of Lake Charles Historian Maude Reid. In 1940 the bronze engraved historic marker commemorating the rich history of Bilbo cemetery was donated by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The plaque was originally placed near the Calcasieu Courthouse but was eventually moved to its current location near the cemetery. In 2002 the Millennium Statue of Jesus, designed by Janie Stine LaCroix, a descendant of Jacob Ryan, was unveiled at the cemetery. The statue is meant to be a tribute to the pioneers buried at the cemetery, as well as a symbol to show that Lake Charles is a city of peace makers.
