Read More	The Brock Family Cemetery, at 6889 Free Union Road (Rt. 601) in Albemarle County, Virginia, is on land purchased in 1836 by Zachariah Brock, a free man of color. The Brock family lived on the property until the death of Nimrod (Keller) Brock, Zachariah Brock's grandson, in 1933. Reference to the family cemetery is made in the 1933 deed of sale: "one-quarter of an acre at the point of said land where a graveyard now exists, for the use of Millie Keller and her children . . . the row of six graves now existing on said reserved plat and the balance of another row of the same number of graves." Death certificates indicate that the six existing graves mentioned in the 1933 deed included the graves of Nimrod Brock and Eliza Spinner Brock. It is believed that Nimrod Brock's parents and grandparents were buried in the other four graves. Millie Keller, the wife of Nimrod (Keller) Brock, was buried at Lincoln Cemetery in Charlottesville when she died in 1944. It is not yet known whether the spaces reserved for six future graves were ever used. Neighborhood oral history recalls a time when there were field stones marking the graves in the Brock Family Cemetery and tells how the family that lived there after the Brocks pulled the fieldstone markers up and "pushed them over the bank." Also remembered are the Brock family descendants coming to the gravesite on Easter Sunday to pay their respects. The location of the Nimrod Brock house which once stood behind the cemetery is still marked by a row of daffodils in the spring. Zachariah Brock was part of an extended family network of free people of color, including Garland Spinner and Revolutionary War veteran Sherod Goings, who settled in the Boonesville area in the late 18th and early 19th century. The story of these families and their interactions with their white neighbors in those early days is told by Professor Kirt von Daacke, Co-Chair of the University of Virginia President's Commission on Slavery, in his book, “Freedom Has a Face: Race, Identity, and Community in Jefferson's Virginia,” published by University of Virginia Press in 2012. The Brock Family Cemetery is about a mile south of Boonesville, Virginia, and twenty miles north of Charlottesville, Virginia.
