I always take the time to try and further my knowledge about my family heritage. On this trip in June of 1980 I wanted my children and husband to visit the old homestead of my great-great-great grandfather William Burns which is still standing just South of Corinth, Illinois. The old homeplace has a small graveyard on the property which I had visited in October of 1969. At that time I had been in a hurry and had only copied the gravestones of my great-great-grandparents, Wesley and Mary Burns, and noted that there were other marked graves. Later I was to regret not copying the other stones and I intended to rectify this oversight. We drove to Corinth and then South and West along #15 to the homestead-- Southwest central part of Section 32. I stopped at the farm of the owner on the other side of the road and asked permission to visit the old Burns/Greeney farm. He said it was just fine, but to be careful of the pigs and the electric fences. Also that the lane was quite muddy. We found the country lane and parked the car on a bridge and saw the huge boar hog and his harem in the lower corn fields. We started hiking up the country lane to the top of the rise where the old farm house was. I was so very intent on seeing the place that I didn't notice anything else. We found the house which had been unoccupied for approximately 40 years and was now being used as a corn crib. Now where was the cemetery? I remembered it as being in a South-Westerly direction from the house. We started rather gingerly to go toward a large herd of piglets avoiding two electric fences and the pig deposits. At last there was the remains of the cemetery-- right in the middle of the pig runs. The pigs had completely ruined the cemetery and made wallows where the graves had been. The tombstones were toppled and turned over and half-buried in pig debris. All of this was behind yet another electrified and barbed wire fence. I was ready to leave right then, but my husband said "no" and that he was quite willing to climb the fence to turn over and scrape the stones for their markings. As he pointed out conditions were not likely to improve and this might be the only chance that a genealogist would have to get the information. (An inventory of the stones follows this article.) This article should be an admonitory one to anyone who sells land with an old family cemetery on it to have it so specified in the deed; so that, the cemetery will remain behind a fence and unharmed and available for future generations to visit. After he had copied the stones, we returned to the farm and looked around. Several items of interest were found. The farm had a cistern and a well. Also a very pretty old brick fireplace was still intact. A brick path that lead up to the front porch had two of the original carved pillars still supporting the porch roof. At the front door was a large mill stone and I was reminded that my great-great-great-grandfather Williams Burns had had the first horse drawn mill in Franklin County (later Williamson) in 1819. In the back of the house was the old cellar hole and a plum tree which still bore fruit. Along the fence row was growing a rambling rose in full bloom. As we returned to the car, I was sad to see what had become of this graveyard of one of the pioneer families in Southern Illinois. We never uncovered the gravestone of my great-great-grandmother, Mary (Hampton) Burns which I had seen on my earlier visit, but I have included it for the sake of completeness in the inventory. I also will include the two stones from Zion Methodist Church at Corinth, Illinois which are the stones of my great-great-great-grandparents, William and Dosia Burns. This William came with his brothers to Franklin County prior to 1817 and later helped build the first Methodist chapel here. Greeney, footstone M.G. died 28 July 1906 aged 59 yr. 8 m. 6 d. Jane C. his wife (Her maiden name was Burns) 4. Double heart shaped stones Mary Susie b. and d. d. Sept. 16, 1879 May 3, 1876 aged 1 yr. 1 d. Children of M.W. and J.C. Greeney 5. Handcarved stone with backward "s" Merty M. Burns was b. Janu. 14 1887 d. July 28, 1887 aged 6 m. and 15 days 6. Henry son of M.W. and J.C. Greeney footstone HG died Sept. 16, 1902 aged 22 y 6 m 13 d 7.
