On 2 Dec 1861 the river rose 55 ft and covered the city in 7 feet of water. Back then the cities were built of wood. The city was never rebuilt. The neighboring county is Yamhill (where I live) about 5 miles away from Champoeg Cemetery. The city of Newberg wasn't established until 1889. The records for Champed are kept by a family across the street from the cemetery.
