About - Catholic cemetery (likuashkan) The Catholic cemetery is the oldest cemetery (mishta-ueshkatsh) in Mashteuiatsh. The location of the current cemetery dates back to 1903. Before this period, the dead (ka nipita) were buried (alkahekanuatsh) in front of the first chapel (nishtam aiamiheutshuapiss), moved during the winter of 1874-1875. "The cemetery was down where Davis Philippe,...after that, they made the cemetery up the hill." The land of the current cemetery was purchased (aiamupanitsh) from an Ilnu of the community (Pekuakamiulnu). At the very beginning of the cemetery, there were only very simple wooden crosses (tshipiatikuatsh) and only a few funerary monuments also without great artifice. In 1977-1978, an action committee decided to undertake the redevelopment of the cemetery (likuashkan). This is how the stone boundary (ashini) and the moat outside are constructed. Human bones (ushkana) were discovered in 2013 on the site of a house (mitshuap) under construction near Pekuakami. The age of the bones was estimated at around 710 years. The bones were handed over to the community (ilnussi) of Mashteuiatsh and a ceremony (aimihituakanu) imbued with sobriety and respect (tshe tshiam aitunanuatsh kie ashitsh ishpitelitamun) took place on October 19 (uashtessiu-pishim) 2016 to deposit the remains human beings in the Catholic cemetery under a plaque on which is inscribed "Milu Aluepi".
