Description	:	In the War of 1812, an important battle was fought on land and water in the vicinity of Crab Island. The naval battle began and ended September 11, 1814, with Commodore Thomas MacDonough victorious. The dead from the naval battle, American and British, were buried in unmarked graves on Crab Island. Two officers, Lieutenant Peter Gamble and Lieutenant John Stansbury, were subsequently exhumed and reinterred in Riverside Cemetery in Plattsburgh.
