Description : An Alabama Historical Commission plaque in front of DeForest Chapel at Talladega College recounts two former slaves, Thomas Tarrant and William Savery, from Talladega pledged to provide a school for former slave's children while attending the freedmen's convention in Mobile during November of 1865. They returned home and built a one-room schoolhouse with salvaged lumber. General Wager Swayne, chairman of the Freedmen's Bureau, then persuaded the American Missionary Association to purchase the nearby Baptist Male Academy building for their use in 1867.
