Among the many who were interred in the old burial place on East Main Street were: Mrs Thomas Budington, Mrs Charlotte Shaver, Mrs Isaac Minkler, Sylvia Shaver, Mrs Denton, Mrs Jenkins, Mrs Budington, Mrs Griswold, William Mundy, T B White, Andrew Shaver, George Heimbaugh, Ephraim Hall, Mr Jenkins, Walter Budington, Lorenzo Griswold, Joseph Griswold, Mr Chapin, Mr Russell, Major Ganson, Andrew Wessell, together with a few other pioneers and their children. When the city council moved to close the cemetery, an old settler said "Instead of taking any action that will result in vacating this cemetery, I believe that it is the duty of the city authorities to improve the grounds, enclose them with a good substantial fence, and preserve them for all time to come." East Intermediate School was built on the site which is now the New Tribes Bible Institute next door to W A Foote Hospital. The following can be found in Sec 33 Woodland Cemetery: Shaver, Budington, Jenkins, Heimbaugh, Southworth, Hudson, McLim, Darling. Others can be found at Mt Evergreen: Griswold, White. Mundy, Wessell. From an 1877 newspaper article: All classes were buried here without reference to creed or color. When the cholera raged in 1854, a train load of emigrants from Europe was unloaded at Jackson, owing to the existence of the epidemic among them. Many of these people died within a few days after their arrival and are buried in the old town cemetery. After the opening of Mt Evergreen Cemetery in 1844, the east side cemetery gradually fell into neglect. As of 1877, all folks who were Catholic were removed to St John's Cemetery from East Main.
