It was established in the early 1700s and was preceded by the Second Parish Cemetery. The name reflects the history of the town. The area was once the Second Parish of Scituate. In 1849, the new town was named "South Scituate". In 1888, the town changed the name to Norwell. Both times the cemetery and the church updated their names, reflecting the changes within the community. The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as NRW800.
