Description	:	Fodslette Church is the center of the smallest parish on Langeland. Read More	Fodslette Church is the center of the smallest parish on Langeland. History Around 1250, the church was originally built of boulders and bricks, while the building was expanded over the next few hundred years. The upper parts of the tower were completed in 1649, but during the Swedish wars, large parts of the church were blown up when Swedish riders looted it, and set fire to the gunpowder store that was in the attic. However, the church was rebuilt after the wars and even had a restoration in 1820. There may have been a kind of burial chamber under the church established by Melchior Hvas, who was one of the lords of the nearby Hjortholm Estate. His initials were on a missing confessional. Melchior Hvas reportedly subsisted on piracy, and could neither read nor write. The altarpiece The altarpiece is the jewel of the church. A beautiful sculptural work done by Claus Berg in 1520, which originally had a motif of the Virgin Mary. She has since disappeared and been replaced by a copy of Thorvaldsen's Christ. However, the church has received a new copy of a Madonna figure for the medieval rosary in 1995. It is carved in oak on the old techniques, and when you look at it now, it looks like it has always been there. In the porch is a folder which illustrates the process of carving the figure.
