Description : Fort de Chartres was a French fort, built on the east bank of the Mississippi River in southwestern Illinois. It is located about four miles west of Prairie du Rocher. The first fort was built in 1718-1720, by French soldiers from New Orleans. Due to flooding, it was rebuilt two more times. The first fort only lasted five years and construction on a new fort began in 1825. Both of the first two forts were built of wood.
