During this time, the vast Greek population of thousands in Alexandria was very wealthy, including authors, physicians, pharmacists, actors, architects, politicians, and businessmen. In the 21st century, the Greek population in Alexandria has radically decreased to fewer than 1,000, thus the graves in this cemetery have been neglected, abandoned, and looted. Many Greek families escaped to Greece during the Egyptian Revolution in the summer of 1952. Within the cemetery, there are several huge family Parthenon-like tombs with statues of angels and columns, while other family graves are in plots surrounded by wrought iron fences and simple slabs on the graves. The Greek key pattern is used in many designs, along with colored stained-glass windows. After being looted, the metal doors on huge tombs can be found opened with the tomb completely empty. Besides Greek inscriptions, there are some written in French and Arabic. There is a section of graves for the Russian Orthodox, who escaped to Alexandria during the Russian Civil War of 1917.
