Description	:	The Harris Cemetery at Thornfield plantation is on private property in the community that used to be known as Robinson's Springs, Alabama, now included within the broad civic area of Millbrook. This cemetery was established by Buckner Harris (1799-1888), whose father-in-law, Alexander McKeithen, is said to have built the family home that still stands on the property. This cemetery was established by Buckner Harris (1799-1888), whose father-in-law, Alexander McKeithen, is said to have built the family home that still stands on the property. Buckner married Sarah McKeithen (1811-1900) in 1841, and both are buried in the family cemetery at Thornfield. The older McKeithen Cemetery, where Archibald and other relatives are buried, is a short distance away. Their son, Joseph Archibald Harris (1845-1923), inherited the plantation and family burial ground, and lived here with his wife, India Crenshaw (1848-1901), and children. The last Harris descendant to live at Thornfield was Dorothy Harris (1927-1997), daughter of Chiles Harris and granddaughter of Joseph Archibald Harris and India Crenshaw. With Dorothy's death, the Harris plantation property was sold and developed into residential subdivisions and business lots, except for limited acreage reserved around the house and cemetery, which was sold to private owners. The original plantation site, with house and cemetery, has changed hands several times since the property passed out of the Harris family. At some time in the late twentieth century, Harris descendants removed all the older tombstones from the cemetery, and placed two neat rows of identical block markers to the individuals buried there. Each small granite block has only a short name and years of birth and death. This may have been done for appearance's sake, to "clean up" the cemetery if the old markers were deteriorating/leaning/falling, or the purpose may have been to minimize the visual evidence that there was a cemetery near the residence, in order to encourage potential owners to purchase the site. Unfortunately, the original inscriptions on the old markers were never recorded, and the original headstones were not saved. Full names, relationships, and dates of birth and death for individuals in the Harris Cemetery are derived from other records.
