Henley Maori Cemetery is the formal name of the cemetery, the cemetery is casually known as Maori Cemetery or Kaika Cemetery. The cemetery is 21 miles south west of Dunedin on the banks of the Taieri River at Taieri Ferry, Henley. This part of the Taieri is known as South Taieri as distinct from North, East and West Tairei. Otokai public cemetery, on a hillside just north of Henley, is only a couple of miles from Henley Maori Cemetery. People of Maori descent are buried in both places and there has been confusion as to which cemetery in some cases. The Maori Kaika Takaaihitau, The Maori Kaika at Taieri Ferry was situated near the river, upstream of the bridge and on the left or northern bank. Once many Maori people lived here for most of the year, leaving each year on a journey to the Muttonbird Islands and no doubt for the harvest of other foods. They also maintained a PA site on a nearby hilltop, Te Moua, until Te Rauparaha's forces had been dealt with and peace settled on the Southern Maoris. Ideally situated for eeling and fishing, the Kaika was visited by Dr. Edward Shortland in 1843 when he was entertained by Hakaraia Te Raki, Chief of the Taieri. When Tuckett visited the area the following year he found the Kaika deserted as the residents were no doubt away on their annual Muttonbirding expedition. During the discussions for the sale of the Otakau Block for the Scottish settlement, Te Raki made a strong plea for the reservation of the Kaika and Onumia, a strip of land from it to the sea, for use by the Maoris and this indeed was set aside as a Maori Reservation. Before Te Raki died in 1862 he willed the Taieri property to Wereta Tuarea and after him, Rawiri Te Uraura, with the admonitions "if the white man brings trouble to this land, it is for you to put it down. If the Maori brings trouble to this land, it is for you to put it down. This is the end of Hakaraia Te Raki's talk." According to Thelma Smith there were some hundreds of Maori living at the Kaika hen the first bullock wagon passed through in 1858 on its way to Mataura. No record has been found of the exact number who resided there in those days, but before long the population became much smaller due to many reasons. Illness was one of the reasons, and by 1872 there were not more than a dozen full-blooded Maori living here. The Maori were tatooed and slept in whares on bracken or fern beds, with traditional mats arranged around the walls and a fire on the earth floor in the middle. The smoke did not usually rise directly to the hole in the roof, but swirled around the interior before escaping.
