According to legend, some of the first white settlers in this vicinity were massacred by the Indians before the Revolutionary War days. Caldwell's History of Indiana Countystrengthens this theory by mentiong "Well Filled graveyards on the Indiana County side of the Conemaugh River at least 80 years before the 1859 establishment of the townships.
