Some believe that it is in the marsh as one headstone was found there. History: In February 1789 Francis Marie Loys Dumoussay DeLavause purchased Sapelo Island from John McQueen, who took the name Don Juan McQueen when he fled to Spanish Florida from South Carolina. Doumoussay hoped to interest other Frenchmen in investing in what became known as the Sapelo Company in 1790. There were five investors in this Company and, in 1792, a sixth, Villihucet, had a part share. He was on Sapelo very briefly and was beheaded on his return to France. The five partners, Dumoussay, Julian Joseph Chappedelaine, Pierre Cesar Picot de Boisfeuillet, Christophe Poulain duBignon and Grande Mos Mesle built a large house on the North end of Sapelo which became known as High Point. By 1793 the Sapelo Company, which had bought other properties, was dissolved. duBignon gained Jekyll Island, Boisfeuillet and his nephew, Chappedelaine, were on the North end of Sapelo. Dumoussay received large acreage on Blackbeard Island and 400 acres on Sapelo. (source 2) Dumoussay died on 11 September 1794 of a fever and was buried in the High Point Cemetery. His gravestone, lost for many years, was recovered from the nearby marsh. (source 2. Four days after his death, in an argument with his uncle, Chappedelaine was shot and killed by his uncle, Boisfeuillet. In 1802 Boisfeuillet's daughter, Angelique, married Santo Domingo refugee, John Montalet. She died in 1805 and he left his heavily mortgaged Hermitage Plantation on the Savannah River and moved to his inherited plantation, High Point, on Sapelo. This last French owner lived a peaceful life on Sapelo until his death in 1814. These, also, died on Sapelo Island. Their burial place is unknown, perhaps in Savannah, GA.: 1.
