Description : Hopetoun Cemetery or the Roman Catholic Chapel Yard, was the first formal cemetery in Bacchus Marsh. It is the oldest known Catholic cemetery in regional Victoria and one of only a small number of surviving churchyard cemeteries in the state. The first Catholic Church, dedicated to St. Laurence O’Toole, was located on the present cemetery site. The ruins are still visible. The earliest known burial, Jeremiah Connell, age 4, was in April 1851.
