First hospital of the Madawaska region, Hôtel-Dieu St. Joseph in Saint-Basile was for some time the only health institution serving both the Canadian and American sides of the St-John River. There were also a farm and its outbuildings, a few houses near the Convent for employees. History:The following is a translation of the plaque within the cemetery. 1873 Arrival of the Sisters of Saint Basil. Seven years later, Mother Maillet had the idea of building a small chapel in the garden of the community, then located in front of the Hotel-Dieu, where the monument of the Sacre-Coeur is now. It was a devotional chapel where sisters, pupils and retired people could go to pray and do processions. 1881 construction of the St. Joseph chapel. The sisters sold a little grain for $13 to buy planks and shingles. They used old windows. The volunteer workers were Olivier Toussaint, Abraham Dufour, Elzear Bois and Olivier Soucy. The altar which was in the academy in 1873 was placed in the chapel. In 1887, Father L.N. Cross and tombstones of 173 sisters, 11 priests and 30 laity benefactors, gathered forever in the cemetery of the sisters of Saint Basile.
