In 1975, before the Missouri Corp. of Engineers decided to flood the Washington and Crawford County areas for the proposed Meramec Lake Project, they took a name only census of all the cemeteries that were going to be flooded. Working with their regional representatives; the Immekus', I obtained a list and maps of all the affected cemeteries. All these cemeteries were going to be washed away when flooded, so, in compliance with the law, the Corp. published in the various local newspapers, notices advising family, friends and interested parties to remove their family from those cemeteries. I began a full name and full date census count of each and every cemetery…all 35 of them. The local citizenry did not want their hills and valley's flooded into Meramec Lake, so they worked hard to defeat this project and after several years, they were successful. However, the Corp of Engineers did not sell back the land to the people but kept all the land they had acquired within the possession of the government. The Corp of Engineers increased the boundaries of the Meramec State Park with land they bought for the proposed lake project. In those years, I drove from St. Peters, Missouri where I lived, out to those cemeteries and recorded what I saw on those headstones. This cemetery is one of those cemeteries. After discovering Find-A-Grave, in 2007, which is a perfect vehicle for posting my cemetery census work, I have now been trying to download and update what I saw back in 1985. Many of those graves are now lost except for my notes. However, it took several years to defeat this proposal and not knowing if we were going to be successful, I decided, using the maps, I saw the headstones myself in 1985. However, it appears that when the Corp published their intentions to flood these cemeteries, several family members moved their loved one's headstones to different cemeteries. Whether or not they removed the remains is unknown, however, this is the original resting place for these ancestors and since the Meramec Lake Project never took place, it is probably where many of our ancestors are still buried.
