Description	:	This small cemetery dates from the 17th Century. In 1654 the authorities granted premission to the Dutch merchants at the small artifical island Deshima to bury their dead men from now on in Japanese soil. Until then, they had had to throw them overboard at sea. The oldest grave dates from 1778 (Hendrik Godfried Duurkoop). The cemetery is situated in the quarter Inassa-machi, in the garden of the Goshinji Temple. It covers an area of some 290 square metres. There are 40 graves. Only a few of them date from before the opening of Japan in 1856, four belong to Russians and in 14 cases the identity of the person in unknown. Being for a long time completely neglected, the cemetery was restored in 1919. Then the intrance on the photograph was added.
