And so are the... Read More	In an open field not too far from the Chowan River, a mile from Winton, N.C., lies a clump of headstones. Among them is a granite slab that stands about 3-and-a-half feet high and 3 feet wide. Buried under it are John Vann and his wife Nancy. The stone lists their names and those of their eight children, all born between 1805 and 1850. The family cemetery is one of the few remnants of the plantation the Vanns once owned, one of North Carolina's largest. The Vanns' house, with its big wraparound porch, is long gone. And so are the more than 50 slaves who kept up the Vanns' estate, looked after their children, and worked their 250 acres of cotton and corn fields. The homestead and cemetery were surveyed first in 1981 then again in 1998 before the facility was built. The "Vann Farm Complex" file includes a domestic structure, family cemetery, two early 19th century dependencies, two 20th century tobacco/storage barns, and a "modern" tobacco barn. It was assigned NC Site File number 31HF207 (31= NC, HF= Hertford County, 207= this is the 207th site in Hertford Co listed with OSA). I've included the three pages of the file about the cemetery (plus the farmstead map and listed family/site history) as a pdf attachment to this email. The map/list (14 graves) may not represent all the people you know to be buried there. It appears it's based on obvious, surface cemetery features like headstones and graves covered with an earthen mound. Markers (like wooden crosses) may have been displaced or degraded over time, obscuring more burials. The tax parcel maps show that one acre of the former property that surrounded the cemetery has been outparceled from the facility's surrounding holdings. This tells me that they cut out a chunk from their property to house a cemetery and remove themselves as being responsible/owners of the cemetery. Satellite imagery seems to suggest that the cemetery parcel is fenced and mowed (perhaps by the facility's crew). Google Earth show that some of the slabs and markers remain visible. The tax parcel (parcel no. 6907-12-0988) info lists no owner or owner's mailing address. The owner's name is "Cemetery" and the cemetery's physical address is listed as 135B Parker Fishery Rd. (though it really looks like it's sitting on the west side of Winton Hunt Club 650 feet from its starting point at Parker Fishery Rd). Winton Hunt Club Rd. is displayed as a regular road on the maps and the cemetery parcel (not owned by Wackenhut Corrections Corp) abuts the road along its northeastern border, so access should be easy. But satellite imagery suggests that the "road" may actually be more of a gravel access route.
