The cemetery is a 1.25 acre section in the NW corner of land lot 247, in the 2nd land district of Coweta. Land Lot 247 was part of the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery; the draw for lot #247 of the 2nd district of Coweta was for the orphan of Nixon Lester, from Dooly Co., Georgia. Read More	The John Coggin Meadows Cemetery is located in the northwest portion of the Interstate 85 cloverleaf at exit 35, Grantville, Georgia. The cemetery is a 1.25 acre section in the NW corner of land lot 247, in the 2nd land district of Coweta. Land Lot 247 was part of the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery; the draw for lot #247 of the 2nd district of Coweta was for the orphan of Nixon Lester, from Dooly Co., Georgia. The following are the land ownerships of LL 247, proven by deeds and Wills. 4 Dec 1833, John Vineyard purchased the property for the sum of 100 dollars (deed book d pages 193-4) from Alfred J Lester, likely the orphan of Nixon Lester. 1 Jan. 1838, John Coggin Meadows purchased land lot 247 in 2nd District of Coweta County, Ga., for $500.00, from John Vineyard (deed book e page 431). Three days later John married Julie Ann Cook. 21 Nov. 1884, Rebecca Urban (Meadows) Smith, a daughter of J.C. Meadows and wife of John W. Smith, purchased LL 247 for the sum of one thousand four hundred and forty seven dollars from J C Meadows’ heirs (deed book q page 741). The Will of John W. Smith recorded in will book d, page 274. Coweta County, Ga. giving LL 247 to his four grandchildren Mrs. Hugh McCulloh, Jr.(Jewell Smith), O. E. Smith (Otis E. Smith, Jr.), Mrs. Claude Bray (Faye Smith), and Mrs. Leonard Wilson (Gene Smith) 25 Oct. 1945, O. E. Smith purchased from his three sisters lot #247 for the sum of five dollars; excluding 1 ¼ acres in southeast corner of said lot, (deed book 46 page 511) from Mrs. Hugh McCulloh ,Jr., O. E. Smith, Mrs. Claude Bray, Mrs. Leonard Wilson, Jr. The deed states southeast corner but the cemetery is in the northwest corner. 9 Feb. 1946, Dr. Hugh McCulloh, Jr. purchased ½ interest of all land in lot #247 (180 acres) with the exception of 1 ¼ acres in the lot corner, for the sum of five dollars from O. E. Smith (deed book 47 page 70). The deed states southeast corner but the cemetery is in northwest corner. 7 April 1950, P. W. McCollum purchased all that tract or parcel of land lying and being in land lot #247 of the second land lot, Grantville, Militia District of Coweta containing (180 acres) from O. E. Smith and Dr. Hugh McCulloh, Jr., for the sum of five thousand four hundred dollars (deed book 57 page 476), exception is 1 1/4 acres in northwest corner reserved as Old Meadows Cemetery and the southwest corner to Clarence L. McCamby (23 acres). Early 1970s When the Department of Transportation was planning the right of way for Interstate 85, it included the “John Coggin Meadows Family Cemetery”. A meeting with surviving members of the Meadows Family was held in the Federal District Court Building in Newnan, Ga. to discuss the disposition of the Cemetery. Family members objected to relocating the Cemetery as a whole or moving individual graves to new sites. After the meeting, the DOT, decided to preserve the Cemetery within the boundaries of the Interstate and the DOT agreed to fence and maintain the Cemetery.
