| Description | : | Kaka Point Cemetery (also known as Makatu Point Cemetery) opened in 1871 and closed in the early 1950s. The headstone transcriptions cover the years 1871-1948. The cemetery is also recorded as the Kaka Point Maori Cemetery or Maka Tu Urapa. The cemetery is located about one kilometre south of Kaka Point on the main road near Karora Creek. Years of neglect had left the cemetery overgrown and hidden from view but following a family reunion in 2005 some restoration work has been carried out. Native shrubs have been planted, the lawns are manicured and the sea view restored. |
