Komarov resided here for some months, the village was name in his honor. The village is located on the Karelian Isthmus in Northwest Russia along the shore of the Gulf of Finland, which was part of Finland until 1712. The village was developed at the turn of the 20th century by the Finnish, but basically destroyed during the Russian Revolution of 1917. The oldest grave is believed to be the composer V. E. Savinsk and dated 1915. The cemetery was originally about 2.5 acres but has expanded through the years. In 1944 there were about ten Finnish graves and three Russians in the unfenced cemetery. The graves were only marked with black wrought iron crosses. After the village became a summer resort in the 1950s, more graves were placed in the cemetery. In 1966 with the burial of international-known poet Anna Akhmatova, the cemetery became a landmark of the Leningrad region, and it is sometimes called Akhmatovsky Cemetery or the Finnish Cemetery. Since her burial, hundreds of well-known Russians have been buried in the cemetery. Many of their tombstones were created by famous sculptors and are currently monuments of sculptural art. With huge evergreen trees, the cemetery grounds are well-maintained with broad paths between clearly labeled sections of the cemetery. Family plots are often enclosed with black wrought iron fences.
