Description : The deed to the trustees of McElrath Chapel was signed over in 1874. Among the trustees was James McElrath, an ex-slave who was allowed to travel to California to earn wages for his freedom. He returned to North Carolina and settled there as a free man. The area near McElrath church is known as "Jim-town", after James McElrath. The cemetery has been in existance for well over 100 years and is well-maintained and still used today. There are many unmarked graves, and some graves marked with field stones or blocks.
