The sign marking the entrance to the cemetery reads: This is the resting place of freed Black people and their descendants. The members of the Hawkins, Pearson, Reese, Steen and Shipp families established the Mt. Pleasant Church, Bryant School, a cotton gin, grist mill and a blacksmith shop in Calhoun County. The cemetery is on private property and access can only be obtained by contacting Mrs Essie Kennedy of Detroit, MI, a descendant of the original Shipp family or from the Mississippi State Historical Museum, in Jackson Mississippi.
