Read More	The Monastery of the Cross is an Eastern Orthodox monastery near the Nayot neighborhood of Jerusalem. Legends claim that the head of Adam, the first man according to the Bible, is buried at this location, yet there are two other places claiming this. History claims the original structure, although evidence is sparse, was built in the 4th century. In 327 AD, the facility became Christian, and the present building dates the eleventh century. In 1305, an ambassador of the King of Georgia, supported by Byzantine emperor Andronikos II achieved repossession of the monastery. Due to heavy debt the monastery was sold by the Georgians to the Greek Orthodox Patriarch Dositheos II in 1685 and in the 21st century, it remains an Eastern Orthodox monastery. The fortified monastery comprises a church and living quarters. The church contains ancient murals. According to tradition, a hole in the ground inside a side chapel is the location that the tree grew, from which the Holy Cross used for Jesus' crucifixion was fashioned. Ancient Georgian documents are archived in the complex's library.
