There are several sections of burials. In the front section and on the road toward the back is where whites are buried. If you follow the road to the very back and go thru a fenced area is where the Hispanics are buried. When exiting from the Hispanic area you go through the fenced area an make an immediate right and when you dead end you will be where the African Americans are buried. This cemetery sits on a rise looking down into a beautiful lush valley. There are many older and majestic headstones in this cemetery. The Hispanic area is very colorful with flowers, and other grave decorations. Items include crosses made of horseshoes, ceramic cowboy hats, and various other items. A cactus that is planted at the head of one grave has initials and other symbols carved into the thick leaves. Many family plots are surrounded by antique fencing. The grounds are very clean and there is room for future burials. Concrete curbs are located around many plots. This is a cemetery I would urge visitors to wander around in and enjoy the surroundings and read the gorgeous older stones. One favorite headstone is from John Henry 1999 and says - His great great grandson; I didn’t want him to be up here by himself.” In 2018 there were 544 burials in this lovely country cemetery. From Waco take Hwy 77 South then turn right (west) on Levi Parkway. Travel until you dead end into Mooreville Texas. Then turn left onto CR 499a drive a short block and turn left on to CR 499e. You will dead end into the cemetery. Historical Marker: Irishman Robert Moore was the first person to settle permanently in this area. Arriving in the 1850s, he opened a general store on top of a hill south of Cow Bayou. By 1859 several other families lived here and the community became known as Mooreville. Confederate veteran Edward McCullough (1834-1902) came to Mooreville in 1865 and later purchased land that included this site. During his ownership this cemetery was established. The graveyard appears to have been used by the community at large from its beginning; the earliest marked graves, which date to 1866, bear surnames of Martin, Grayum, and Russell. The burial ground's existence was first recorded in deed records in 1876, when Edward McCollough deeded land for a burial ground. Since World War II, the historic burial ground has been maintained by the Mooreville Cemetery Association, which was formally established in 1973. The association counts among its members many descendants of Mooreville's original permanent settlers. The Mooreville Cemetery is an important cultural resource in this area. It remains a tangible reminder of this community's pioneer heritage. (1992)
