| Description | : | The Mount Lyn Lowery Cross is a 60-foot lighted cross erected in 1964 by Gen. Sumter Deleon Lowry, Jr., and Ivilyn Ingram Lowry, his wife, of Tampa, Florida, in memory of their daughter, Lyn, who had died of leukemia in 1962. It stands at the summit of Mount Lyn Lowery, originally known as Jone's Knob, near Cullowhee in Jackson County, North Carolina. Mount Lyn Cross was dedicated on August 9, 1965 by the Rev. Billy Graham. In 1967, the North Carolina Legislature officially changed the name of Jone's Knob to Mount Lyn Lowry. |
