A distressing number of graves remain unmarked. Families and loved ones could afford a concrete sarcophagus but left the burial place with no memorial stone. Families represented include Anderson, Broxson, Corbitt, Engram, Ford, Gary, Hogan, Hornsby, Hutcherson, Kincey, Levette, Lewis, Mathews, Matthews, McKelvin, Mills, Nelson, Paul, Reese, Reynolds, Sconiers, Sconyers, Shade, Smith, Tyson, Williams, Youngblood and others unmarked. Perhaps the most famous, historically significant and notable burial at this lonely and isolated spot is that of Amos Cobb, born a slave in North Carolina in 1844. He volunteered in February, 1865, two months before the end of the War of Southern Planters, April 9, 1865, to serve as a private with Company A, 135th Colored Infantry, U S Colored Troops. His grave is marked with a government issued military service tombstone. He is listed in the 1930 U S federal census, age 86, living in rural Geneva County near Chancellor, Alabama. He is the only veteran of the War of Southern Aggression 1861-1865, who served with the U S Colored Troops, United States (Union) Army. The morning I first visited this obscure but well maintained and active burial ground, September 23, 2017, a flock of wild turkeys flew down from a tall pine tree on the edge of the grounds, where they had roosted for the night. A first flight flew down, landed and quickly scurried and disppeared into the woods on the east side of the opening. A second and then a third squadron of turkeys, some adults, some yearlings, flapped their wings loudly, landed on the mowed grass and scampered and disappeared into the undergrowth. No church sets adjacent to or near the burying ground. The nearest church sets deep in the woods on a dirt road, Triumph Road, about a mile to the east: Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ on down out in the country deep in the Piney Woods east of Chancellor and west of Bellwood, Geneva County, Alabama. The Rev Mr "Bud" Nath and other charter members organized, founded and erected this cinder block church in mid-20th Century. It sets in a verdant, bucolic, sylvan dirt roadside setting under oak trees south of Lake Fox Road and north of Alabama Hwy 85, west of Choctawhatchee River, Geneva County, Alabama.
