Read More	A lost (defunct) cemetery; believed to have been in the southwest corner of Section 26, Range 20E, Township 23N (and possibly a part of the south(east) corner of Section 27) in Mayes County, Oklahoma. Historical records relate that the Mission there was located on the West side of the Neosho (Grand) River near its confluence with Cabin (Big Cabin) Creek. History: "From the Chronicles of Oklahoma and historical papers, this mission was in existence from 1829 to 1836. It was called New Hopefield Mission following the close of the first mission some 25 miles to the south. The exact location of the mission and the cemetery have been long erased by time and circumstance. Rev. (William B.) Montgomery and "The "Bird" are known to have been buried there. It is assumed that the many others who died there were also buried at the Mission. This record is presented to preserve the memory of those early day people." -Tyner. There are 25 or more unknown Osage Indians, both adults and children, who can't be entered here, as they were group burials, due to cholera and other diseases. The names and details are unknown, and as the moderator pointed out, "group" memorials are not permitted on Find A Grave, so they go without, unrecognized except for this notation. I have also seen numerous memorials submitted as being "representative" of a large number of people, so those are obviously also in violation. Again, those go unnoticed, but any entries I've made are immediately called out. There also appear to be several individuals who show as being placed in the Union Mission Cemetery on Find A Grave, who were reported to be buried here at New Hopefield Mission Cemetery, including Rev. William B. Montgomery, Superintendent of New Hopefield Mission, the first Missionary to the Osage people. Identified by Tyner in the American Indian Institute's "Our People And Where They Rest," (OPAWTR) James W. Tyner and Alice Tyner Timmons, University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK. 1978 Vol. 10, p. 71. (Library of Congress No. QE99-C5-T97, et al.) Their information is given here as a historical reference and is presented "as is." Their book, like many such cemetery listing compilations, may contain errors. As with any genealogical information, this is merely a "source" and should be considered as such. It falls upon the end-user to verify the accuracy. Most volumes and maps are available for online viewing.
