From my contact who is a volunteer involved with the cemetery research with the Newport Historical Society: History of the Town of Newport, 1806-1906. Chapter on "Extinct Religious Societies of Newport" by George Walker section "Newport Calvinistic Methodist Church". From my contact who is a volunteer involved with the cemetery research with the Newport Historical Society: History of the Town of Newport, 1806-1906. Chapter on "Extinct Religious Societies of Newport" by George Walker section "Newport Calvinistic Methodist Church". This has information about the people who asked for assistance to build this church in a letter dated 7-Feb-1842.... According to that page in the Newport History book, the author borrowed the subscription list from Miss Maria Drew from Utica. There is no date on my book but, judging from the title of the book, it would have been sometime after 1906. She might have been a descendant of one of the members of the congregation because there was a Thomas Drew in the congregation but I really have no idea who she was or where the document is now. My understanding is that Dewitt Jenkins took care of the cemetery by mowing & such as long as he was able to but not burying people there. We believe that after the Calvinistic Church closed, a Baptist congregation used the church (it was labeled Baptist Church in 1868) before it was torn down in 1886. Martin Corner was not an incorporated village or even a hamlet, it was just an intersection of roads where there was a farm or two in the town of Newport. This cemetery is actually closer to Ferrell Corner.
