Description	:	Nichols Cemetery is a very old cemetery located near the mouth of Big Branch, off Brushy Fork of Johns Creek. It has seven or eight graves marked only by fieldstones with no names, and was described as already being old in the 1920's. Elizabeth lived near where the cemetery is located,... Read More	Nichols Cemetery is a very old cemetery located near the mouth of Big Branch, off Brushy Fork of Johns Creek. It has seven or eight graves marked only by fieldstones with no names, and was described as already being old in the 1920's. To date no PROOF has been found to link any names to the cemetery, but all indications point to the likelihood that it includes members of the family of Elizabeth Midkiff Nichols, widow of Christopher Nichols (who had died in Virginia before Elizabeth moved to Pike County). Elizabeth lived near where the cemetery is located, and the 1850 census shows her as owning 100 acres. In the 1850 census, her children were listed as Flemming, Louisa, Lavinia, Savannah (probably Serena), Hiram, and Greenville, all of whom had been born in Virginia. Close neighbors were the Moses Collinsworth family. Elizabeth apparently moved from Virginia to Pike County, Kentucky, after the death of her husband. Her youngest child, Greenville, was born in Virginia in 1843. Elizabeth shows up in the census records as living in Pike County, Kentucky, from 1850 to 1870, but not in 1880, when her son Hiram, described in the 1950 census as "idiot," was living with his brother Flemming's family. Lavinia married Jordan Maynard on September 7, 1853, at her mother's home. Louisa married Nathan Taylor. Flemming married Mary Ann Harold at the home of Jordan and Lavinia on February 20, 1861. Serena was the mother of Billy Nichols, and grandmother of John L. Nichols, a Regular Baptist preacher on Brushy. Greenville "Greenberry" married Cynthia Herald. Others buried on this cemetery COULD POSSIBLY be Elizabeth's son Hiram, and her daughter Serena. They do not show up on any other cemetery in the area, while Greenville "Greenberry" and Lavinia (who married Jordan Maynard) are buried on the Flem Maynard Cemetery also on Big Branch. Flemming's wife Mary Ann Herald Nichols is buried on Flem Maynard Cemetery, but there is no record of Flemming's death or burial. Flemming had died before the 1900 census when Mary Ann is shown as a widow living with her sister-in-law Lavinia. Flemming and Mary Ann had a son Johnny who married Louise Morrison and is buried on the Lowe/Lynch Cemetery on Sycamore. Louisa died sometime between the 1900 census and April 25, 1907 when Nathan married Rebecca Maynard. She is most likely buried with him at Henry Taylor Cemetery. Information about those buried on Nichols Cemetery is at this time strictly CONJECTURE, based on what we do know about the family, and is listed here in the possibility that someone may be able to provide better information.
