This cemetery was named "Odell Cemetery" by historians of the DAR, who conducted a comprehensive survey of Schoharie County Cemeteries for the federal government during the 1930's. The name was taken from name(s) then readable on gravestones present . Odell Cemetery is located on the east side of Allen Road in southwest corner of Jefferson Township, 0.3 miles southwest of Nichols Road (see map). Odell Cemetery is now grossly overgrown, with only two broken gravestones evident; whereas, the 1930's DAR historians suggest there are about a dozen detectable grave sites (this sighting now being about 80 years ago). Trees growing therein are perhaps 30-40 years old (some a foot or more in diameter), and it is evident by several old tree stumps present, that someone perhaps 40-50 years ago cleared this cemetery. According to the Town of Jefferson properties and owners map dated 1866, the land where Odell Cemetery rests was then owned by B.S. Odell (believed to be Benjamin Smith Odell) --- and therefore Odell Cemetery was very likely the former Benjamin Smith Odell Family Burial Ground. There is at least one additional burial as recorded in the 1930's cemetery survey, a badly broken stone with the name "Martha J.", and anything else inscribed on this stone was not decipherable to DAR historian survey takers. An entry was made in the cemetery burials citing a Martha J., but it is unlikely we will ever get more information relating to this soul. And there were also several probable gravesites marked only by field stones (a grave marker sometimes done for infants in this period).
