Utica Daily Press Thursday Morning, August 28, 1913 Bodies to Be Removed- Commemorative Would Like to Hear from Relatives Regarding Their Wishes Oneida, Aug 18- The City Federation of Women's Clubs has issued the following Statement: "For many years the old cemetery east of Elizabeth Street has not been used and has fallen into a neglected and overgrown condition, many of the stones being overturned and broken. Laid out when Oneida was but a small village. There was no cemetery association formed for perpetual care. The last burial was in 1875. Since that time many of the bodies have been removed to Glenwood and elsewhere by friends, and of those still remaining many belong to families scattered or not living. For this Reason there is to be hope of improvement in the suitable care of the whole. Therefore a movement has been started by the City Federation of Women's Clubs: First: For the general clearing of the underbrush and debris in the cemetery and thr recording of all the stones found. This has been carefully done and more than $100 expended by the federation. Second: For securing the removal of all bodies as far as possible to a more suitable place. Third: The gradual conversion of the whole grounds into a pleasant park with the consent of the various owners. In searching for people interested, we appeal to the public for kind co-operation in our efforts. If relatives are unable to see personally to the removal of these friends, will you please communicate your wishes to the undersigned, who will direct the work if you so desire. If you have a lot in Glenwood the cost of simple removal will be the nominal sum of $3, not to include the moving and setting of any stones. That the work so well begun may be carried forward as rapidly as the weather may permit, the secretary would appreciate a prompt reply. Most sincerely yours, MRS. H. D.
