Read More	GPS for historical purposes The cemetery dates at least as far back as 1836, but possibly a bit earlier. On April 1, 1836 the land was deeded to Benjamin Lucas as part of an 80 acre tract. On July 29, 1841 Benjamin Lucas and his wife Mary deeded one acre "to the trustees of the Methodist Episcopal church for use as a burial ground. Burials are known to have been made in the years before the land was turned over to the church trustees. The Lucas family had several young children that died prior to the date the burial ground was given to the church. At an unknown time prior to the beginning of the 20th Century burials ceased being made there, instead locals favored burials in the cemetery now known as Liberty chapel. About 1965 a survey of the cemetery was made by a local man who recorded the names and information on the stones that were then still legible. Because it had become overgrown with brush and weeds and some of the stones had fallen over or broken he was able to record the names of only around a dozen burials. About 1972 the surrounding land was purchased and subdivided the cemetery land was included in the plat for the new housing addition. The land was cleared and the remaining tombstones were lost. Two home lots now cover most of the original one acre burial ground. The developer of the subdivision claimed they never knew the cemetery was there and that there were no visible remains of a cemetery even though A study of the Abstract of Title that was prepared for that development clearly included a copy of the 1841 deed. Whether the developer actually knew he was destroying a cemetery or not is unknown but no sign of the cemetery exists today.
