Description	:	Payne Family Cemetery at "The Cottage" on Ivy Creek #658 Col. John Payne of "White Hall" in Goochland Co., was born in 1713 and was a member of the House of Burgessess 1752-88. Nathaniel West Dandrige and Dorothea Spotswood Dandridge [daughter of Gov. Alexander Spotswood]. Archer's half-brother, Col. Phillip Payne, resided at "Airy Mount", on Seneca Creek near Marysville and married, Elizabeth, a sister of Martha Dandridge. Archer and Martha D Payne had 11 children. Three of their daughters married sons of Col. John Bolling [b. 1700, and a member of the House of Burgessess for 30 yrs]; John Bolling owned 20,000 acres, adjoining Nicholas Davies, in the present Boonsboro & Peakland sections of Lynchburg. Per Ruth H Early, the third son of Archer Payne, John Robert Dandridge Payne, married Susan Bryce and "lived for may years in Lynchburg". Archer's oldest daughter also married a Bryce. Archer's second son, Alexander Spotswood Payne, married Charlotte Brice, another daughter of Archibald Bryce, of Scotland. In 1840, Alexander Spotswood Payne moved to "the Cottage", on Ivy Creek, Campbell Co., with a farm comprising some 700 acres. In "Campbell Chronicles & Family Sketches" 1927, Ruth Early described her visit to the "old family burying ground at 'The Cottage'" as being nine graves marked by tombstones with inscriptions. It is unknown how many additional graves were there. Some records indicated that "The Cottage" was built in 1795, others state it as 1826. It is unknown who founded the cemetery. The cemetery was located near the residence on property presently occupied by Dr. Robert Bowen. Prior to the 1964/5 development of the Ivylink subdivision, the cemetery was sought to be relocated. However, only the tombstones were removed to the Presbyterian Cemetery in Lynchburg. Surveyed & Researched by Revely Carwile, Jr., 1999. Campbell Co. Family Cemeteries, Vol. VIII As listed by Ruth Early & Julia Asher, the tombstones of nine graves existed at the original location. At least 13 graves from Ivy Creek were re-interred into the Presbyterian Cemetery in Lynchburg. Many of these have the original stones & footstones, although some have new marked
