Description | : | Nazi concentration camp, operated between 1941-1943. Initially built to hold Soviet POWs (of which 20,000 had died by 1942), towards the end of the camp's run it held primarily Jewish laborers. The camp was liquidated when all of its 14,500 prisoners were shot to death between November 3-4, 1943, during a massacre called Aktion Erntefest, which resulted in the deaths of 43,000 Jews that were held prisoner in the Poniatowa, Trawnicki and Majdanek concentration camps. There are several memorials dedicated to the victims of the massacre at Poniatowa throughout Poland. |
