The Ragsdale-Richardson Cemetery was adjacent to the early community of Ragsdale in far northern Fannin County, TX. In the Bonham News Annual of 1888, Ragsdale is described as “rich sandy country, surrounded by an abundance of fine timber with many fine farms and excellent farmers” and having “one store of general merchandise doing a good business, a post office, blacksmith and wood shop, and a large and commodious school building that answers for both church and school purposes.” The Ragsdale ferry near the mouth of the Blue River was a busy crossing point. There was a lot of travel through this area, both north-south in addition to people moving further west. The earliest known burial was that of William Hagler in 1869. It is unknown if other burials occurred prior to that date. The latest known burial, with a still evident headstone, is that of Nina Maria Soto in 1918. The cemetery came to be known as the Richardson Cemetery in more recent years because of the many members of the William Adolphus “Dolph” (W. D.) Richardson family buried here. The name has alternated between Ragsdale and Richardson and combinations thereof over the years. The Richardson family immigrated to Texas from Shelby County, Alabama. W. D. Richardson and wife, Elizabeth Hinkle Richardson, were some of the earliest settlers of this area as were others buried here. Dr. Thomas H. Brasher, a contemporary of W.D. Richardson, was also from Shelby County, Alabama. Andrew Rhodes is listed with W. D. Richardson in the 1870 Fannin County Agricultural Schedule, Precinct 5. Along with Andrew Rhodes, we know of three of his children buried here. Sometime in the 1950s, several grandsons of William Adolphus installed the chain link fence surrounding the Richardson plots which still stands. The total number of burials in this cemetery is unknown. It is 1.41 acres in size, although the cemetery does not appear to occupy all of the area. It has been in a neglected state for several decades and many of the headstones have fallen victim to animals and weather. In 1902, John Thomas “Tom” Pierce donated this 1.41 acres out of his land on the W. A. Grady Survey #447, which contained the existing cemetery, to the Fannin County Judge and all his successors in office for the purpose of a church and school (Fannin County Deed Records, Book 89, page 577).
