Description	:	The former St. Christopher's Church (church built in 1883) property was once part of a 100 acre crown grant given to Martin Alguire a United Empire Loyalist. John Elmsley and his wife Charlotte as well as George Sherwood bought up many UEL grants in this area as well as across Ontario. Eventually all but two acres was bought and disposed of by John & Charlotte Elmsley and George Sherwood. John Elmsley and his wife Charlotte as well as George Sherwood bought up many UEL grants in this area as well as across Ontario. Eventually all but two acres was bought and disposed of by John & Charlotte Elmsley and George Sherwood. In 1866, Charlotte Elmsley had a document drawn to convey the 2 acre property known as Part Lot 30 in the 15th concession of Plympton in Lambton County measuring 5 chains by 4 chains, to the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation for the Diocese of Sandwich. The document was registered on February 9, 1870. Fr. Henry Japes from the Parish of Wyoming was responsible for picking up the deed and paying the registry fee. The first reference to the property (that I could find) was on an 1871 Compile Plan of the Town of Forest that listed the two acre lot as an "R.C. Burial Ground". The R.C. Church of Forest was located elsewhere in Forest, on lot 5 James Street West (corner of James and Jefferson Streets). In 1891 it was decided that a new church should be built. Since the Parish of Forest was in possession of a large parcel of land and the land had been in use as the Roman Catholic Cemetery, it was logical that the new Church would be built by the cemetery on the corner of Queen and Main Streets. From all accounts this cemetery was used by the parish up until May 14,1889 when the Town of Forest purchased 10 acres of land from Mr. and Mrs. W. Whillans for $900 and opened Beechwood Cemetery. At this time some reinterments may have taken place. The cemetery area behind the church became overgrown over the years and was finally cleared and the rest of the remains and tombstones were supposed to be moved to Beechwood Cemetery during the pastorate of Fr. Smith (1957-1965).
