This is the original Sacred Heart Catholic Church cemetery in Flensburg, MN, located a couple of blocks east of the church and sometimes called Sacred Heart East Cemetery. The earliest burial was during 1896, the same year the bishop granted mission church status to Flensburg. The single exception was Marya Wotzka who lived only two months during 1851. It is assumed she was reburied after parish status was granted to Flensburg. Prior to 1896 it is likely that most burials from the Flensburg area were at St. Stanislaus Parish in Sobieski where Flensburg Catholics attended church prior to obtaining their own parish. The last burial in the original cemetery was during 1977 although only three burials were after the mid-1940s, two of which were during the 1950s. The east cemetery had a high water table and "hard pan" soil, very difficult to dig in. As early as 1916 hilltop land was purchased a few blocks south of Flensburg and the newer cemetery is sometimes called Sacred Heart South Cemetery. The first burials there were during 1917 and it continues to be used to this day. Several years ago the original cemetery had fallen into disarray with many fallen and some broken gravestones, perhaps primarily due to vandalism. All remaining unbroken gravestones were moved, set along two long concrete footings as seen in the photos. So the current gravestone positions are no longer next to the appropriate graves, and the graves themselves are not visible in the grass-covered area. It is likely that several burials are not included in this cemetery listing because of broken and discarded gravestones and early use of wooden markers lost since decayed. Moreover, verbal information passed along over the years has suggested an area was originally set aside outside the official cemetery boundaries, for burial of infants who died before being baptized (then believed to be in Limbo), and for suicides and others deemed unsuitable for burial on concencrated ground. Perhaps additional burials could be found in church records, if they still exist, but that is beyond the scope of this work. - Arlin Super
